Instructions for writing abstracts

Abstracts that do not follow these are returned to the author before review.

  • Written in English
  • Title capitalised, maximum 250 characters
  • Authors on one line, first name then last name, no academic titles
  • Affiliation (section, institution, city, country) for the first author and every co-author
  • Body of maximum 300 words, or 2000 characters, excluding title, authors and affiliation
  • A line of three to five keywords
  • Structured as introduction, material and methods, results, conclusions
  • Enough detail to justify the conclusion: avoid "results will be presented"
  • No tables, graphs or photographs in the abstract
  • Abbreviations explained where they first appear

How submissions are assessed

Blinded peer review

Every abstract is scored by at least two reviewers who cannot see author names or affiliations.

Scoring

Reviewers score on originality, methodological quality, clarity and relevance to the conference themes.

Allocation

The highest-scoring abstracts are offered oral slots; the remainder are offered posters. Authors may decline a format.

Early career

Travel grants for students and trainees

A limited number of travel grants covers registration and a contribution towards travel for students, PhD candidates and researchers within three years of their doctorate. Applications open with abstract submission.

Published work is generally not accepted for oral sessions, but may be accepted as a poster if it has clear educational value for this audience. Declare it at submission.

Yes. There is no limit on submissions, though no presenting author is normally given more than one oral slot.

Yes. Indicate your preference at submission, and you may decline an oral offer without losing your poster place.

Submit what you have, and use the late-breaking round in September for data that lands after the main deadline.
